George Hadley (16xx-1686) in Ipswich Land Records
Early land records for the town of Ipswich in the Massachusettes Colony can be found in three places:
- The town records. Initially, all affairs of the town were included in the Ipswich town records, including land grants and land transfers. The original records and a hand copy of these are available on film from the LDS Library. A transcript of these records was published as The Ancient Records of the Town of Ipswich, Vol. 1. - From 1634 to 1650. Click to download a PDF version (4.2MB). Click here for a summary of the George Hadley information in these books.
- Ipswich Deeds books. For a time, Ipswich recorded land grants and transfers in a set of books separate from
the town records and the Essex County land records.
These records have been cleaned up and bound in hardcover. They are kept at the Southern Essex Registry of Deeds in
Salem, MA. They are kept in a separate locked room, so you must ask someone at the customer service desk
get them for you. See Ipswich Deed Books for the index and details of George Hadley
in these records.
I have a copy of these records on CD. - Later land records are kept in the records books in the public area of the Southern Essex County Registry of Deeds.
There are separate indexes for grantor and grantee which tell you which volume and page contains the records.
I have copied these and will soon transcribe them here. (BHH)
